AMA about social development, public health and communication. I'm currently playing a key role in UNICEF by promoting positive social norms for sanitation and adolescent empowerment in India.

Hi everyone! My name is Bhai and I am a communication for Development specialist with UNICEF India, with over two decades of experience in social change using people-centred communication approaches.

I specialise in social development, public health and communication. Previously I had led Polio Eradication initiative in India. Today, India is Polio-free consecutively for last over four years. This means no child today is hit by crippling Polio disease. The social mobilization strategies and the SMNet (Social Mobilization Network established by UNICEF) have been the most effective strategies to reach this stage.

How does a person having polio affect the rest of the family?

Nov 8, 11:49AM EST0

The infection usually spreads from 1 person to another through contact with the stools (faeces) of an infected person. If even a minute amount of stool  from an infected person gets on to another person's hands, or an object like a toy, which then touches their mouth then they can also become infected. The virus can then travel to the gut (bowel) to cause an infection.
